ABBA Big issue

Why has the big issue used ABBA in their issue about the European union referendum.

The big issue has done lots of stories on hard news and soft news and this could show that hard news and soft news have been merged together to try to lure different personalities in to buy a copy of the big issue.
clearly they have used abba, we can see this in the choice of clothing, it looks like they have photoshoped sturgeon,Cameron,Johnson and farages head onto abba so it looks like the leaders of their respective parties. we also see this in the title the winner takes it all and this is one of Abbas songs that they released in 1980, could the big issue be trying to lure the older generation into buying the issue. the title also links with the referendum as the beneficial person of the referendum which we great Britain voted to leave will take power and will take all of Britain, this is not the case for any of these people although Johnson and farage did want to leave and this was the case, they would have been happy with the result unlike Cameron and sturgeon. Cameron stepped down as prime minster and has not been seen since and Scotland wanted to leave great Britain to become independent, they had the vote and voted to remain in great Britain.

as already mentioned the four politicians that are picture had a massive role in the referendum. sturgeon was leader of the SNP Cameron was prime minister at that time, farage was leader of ukip (Many have different opinions) and Johnson was mayor of London. all of these are famous (and hated by some) and are used in this edition to represent the referendum, the older generation have a better understanding of politics and are more likely to purchase this edition of the big issue.

the images that have been used reflects the referendum, the voting box is a clear sign of this as this played a big part in the future of great Britain as all of the public votes were held in these. the mix between the glitter ball and the earth is creative and effective as the glitter ball can reflect pop and the referendum had a massive impact on the earth especially in Europe. ballot paper which is the paper that you vote on is also included with some retro themed newspaper.

the text that has been used are also abba songs which shows further evidence that the big issue has attempted to mix pop and politics together in an attempt to lure people into buying the big issue and this has been effective.

overall the mix between politics and pop has paid off and the use of abba to pick a different perspective on the European referendum is clever and many people would have brought this edition of the big issue because of the creativeness of the front cover.
