Media question

how representations in music videos are chosen to promote the artist(s).

Unfinished sympathy was the second song that massive attack released and it was one of the reasons that made massive attack the band that they are today. they wanted to get the whole of Bristol talking and they did just that when this song got released.

the post punk theme to this song was not something that many had heard before, clearly massive attack wanted to grab the headlines in a different way and they did just that. they used post punk to great effect and it was something different which the world population clearly liked. even the music video was different as it was all taken in one shot. the amount of time and practice to perform that would have been large and exhausting for the band as they had to spend many hours, days, months to get a good shot and a clip that would be suitable for a music video and the results were worth it.

so clearly taking a risk early in a music career can be rewarding as well as ruining your music career before it had even started and we the audience soon knew what type of genre that massive attack added to their songs (post punk) and how they have been represented.

however that does not mean that you can change during your music career, radiohead was a band that not many would have heard, massive attack was that too but in 2016 radiohead dropped a new song called bun the witch, the title is different as we can see that the song is not about love which is a popular genre for music artists to go for in the modern era so this like unfinished sympathy was different to other songs that was released in their time.

an art rock type song was burn the witch and it is actually calming and chilled out which is not you would expect with rock. radiohead like massive attack clearly wanted to do something different and like massive attack it worked.

but that was not all that was different as the video itself is eye catching and creative and it is hard to concentrate on the lyrics. the video had two main ideas running all of the way through it, the trumptonshire trilogy which was set in the fictional county of trumptonshire and it had 3 main towns. trumpton, camberwick green and chigley. all of these were used as tv programs probably of which the radiohead band watched when they were younger, that was part of the video which also included a remake of the ending of the wicker man, a horror film where people were burned to death. the use of these tv films could indicate the old times and what life were like and how we did not have all of this technology like we do now.

this songs was different but is was cool and it was worth the effort to combine trumpton and the wicker man together.

both videos represent what the artists feel, in many ways the song unfinished sympathy could represent fear of what love can do to someone and what could happen if you get too close whereas burn the witch could be a song about life and culture and maybe fear too.

these songs have clearly promoted the artists with unfinished sympathy being massive attacks second ever song and perhaps the song theta got the band recognized not just in their hometown in Bristol but worldwide. the two songs have definitely got the bands recognized.
